LEX Africa Werksmans hosts new President and Foreign Minister of Madagascar – June 2014

South African LEX Africa member Werksmans hosted a lunch for President Hery Rajaonarimampianina and Foreign Minister Razafitrimo on their recent visit to South Africa to attend President Zuma‘s inauguration.

The lunch was attended by South Africa’s ambassador to Madagascar, Gert Grobler, business executives, journalists and diplomats.  The President and Foreign Minister were welcomed byWerksmans Chairman Des Williams and Peter Sullivan of Landelahni led a question and answer session with the President before interviewing him for Forbes Magazine.

The election of President Rajaonarimampianina promises to end the political crisis that has engulfedMadagascar since the 2009 coup which toppled former President Ravalomanana.

The World Bank and International Monetary Fund have restored normal relations and sanctions are being lifted. Madagascar has great potential especially in the oil, mining and tourism sectors. Challenges however remain.
