The new Nationality Law, approved by Law 2/2016, of 15 April 2016, sets out the new conditions for recognition, acquisition, loss and
re-acquirement of the Angolan nationality. The Law has entered into effect at the date of its enactment (15 April 2016) and revoked the previous Law 1/05, of 1 July 2005, so far into force.
The new Law clarifies the acquisition and loss of the Angolan nationality vis-a-vis the previous Nationality Laws in force, namely the
1975 Nationality Law and its successor. The requirements for acquisition of the Angolan nationality by means of a marriage with an Angolan Citizen are also defined. The new Law shall not be applied to any pending nationality requests up to the date of publication of the current Nationality Law. Any citizen owning an Angolan identity document, such as national identity card or passport, shall remain as an Angolan citizen, when complying with certain requirements.
A full design of the practical legal guidance for the application process and all of the formalities for application shall be published 90
days from the date of publication of the said Law.
