President Akufo-Addo says a new day is dawning for Ghana

The President says senior high education will be free and youth unemployment will be tackled.

Ghanian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has affirmed his commitment to renovate his country’s health, social and economic systems.

In a statement delivered at the annual Oguaa Fetu Afahye Festival, the President said he had would start by targeting job creation for the youth – Ghana’s largest group of unemployed persons.

According to statistics from Youth Inclusive Entrepreneurial Development Initiative Employment (YIEDIE), Ghana has the highest youth unemployment rate in the world. An estimated 30 percent of youth are unemployed.

The President said part of his administration’s plan, is to invigorate the West African country by instituting free senior high school education.

Another point on President Akufo-Addo’s agenda, is to resolve issues surrounding the National Health Insurance Scheme.

In August, he visited Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Takoradi. His three-day tour was part of a programme to repay part of government’s debt for the NHIS service and rehabilitate public perception of the scheme.

Addressing the media at the time, the President said, “It is our duty to restore the NHIS to its full strength and that is what we are going to do.”

He appealed to health workers to support government’s strides in this direction. “You are counted and represent a huge important human capital in the development of our country and let me tell you that we will provide you with the best healthcare delivery system.”

Meanwhile, three Development Authorities are also expected to be created to expedite government’s infrastructure goals. Part of its objectives includes the 12-kilometer private railway which would link the Ghana Free Zones to the Tema Harbour. Once complete, the line will transport manufactured goods to the Tema Harbour for export.
