This week, the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa (AFSA) announced the creation of the China Africa Joint Arbitration Centre (CAJAC) Johannesburg
The CAJAC, which will operate from South Africa and China, will establish South Africa on the international arbitration stage as it will serve as an international arbitration venue for disputes involving parties from China and Africa as a whole.
Werksmans Attorneys, a founding member of AFSA, was one of 30 signatories to the Johannesburg Consensus which was signed during a ceremony at Sino Steel Plaza on Monday. The firm also serves on various committees to be set-up for the advancement of the project.
The CAJAC represents a significant shift by South Africa into the global arbitration arena and holds great promise for Africa’s further engagement with China.
Together with Michael Kuper SC, the chairman of AFSA (which, together with Africa ADR and the Association of Arbitrators, will be hosting and providing the infrastructural and administrative support for CAJAC in South Africa), Werksmans will host a client presentation at our offices to help promote the initiative and its associated benefits.
