Enactment of the new Nationality Law in Angola

The new Nationality Law, approved by Lawย 2/2016, of 15 April 2016, sets out the newย conditions for recognition, acquisition, loss and
re-acquirement of the Angolan nationality.ย The Law has entered into effect at the date ofย its enactment (15 April 2016) and revoked theย previous Law 1/05, of 1 July 2005, so far intoย force.

The new Law clarifies the acquisition and lossย of the Angolan nationality vis-a-vis theย previous Nationality Laws in force, namely the
1975 Nationality Law and its successor.ย The requirements for acquisition of theย Angolan nationality by means of a marriageย with an Angolan Citizen are also defined.ย The new Law shall not be applied to anyย pending nationality requests up to the date ofย publication of the current Nationality Law.ย Any citizen owning an Angolan identityย document, such as national identity card orย passport, shall remain as an Angolan citizen,ย when complying with certain requirements.

A full design of the practical legal guidance forย the application process and all of theย formalities for application shall be published 90
days from the date of publication of the saidย Law.
