Africa Day presents an opportunity for all Africans to reconnect and recommit themselves to develop a better Africa and a better world!
Africa Day celebrates the day on which the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the precursor to the African Union (AU), was formed in 1963.ย We pay tribute to the progress that we, as Africans, have made, while reflecting upon the common challenges we face in a global environment.
The celebrations highlight African solidarity, unity in diversity, creativity and successes, and the cultural and economic potential of our continent. This celebration is a platform for the continent to engage and build stronger networks and partnerships at various levels across national and international boundaries.
Africa Day 2020 is being commemorated in the shadow of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The AU has described COVID-19 as a pandemic that will require coordinated efforts by its Member States, the World Health Organization, and other partners to limit transmission and minimise harm. This crisis will strain resources and access to services across the continent, making it vital to flatten the curve of COVID-19.
The message for 2020 is ‘Silencing the guns’:ย creating conducive conditions for Africaโs developmentย to achieve the goal of a conflict-free Africa.
LEX Africa wishes all Africans, members and clients, a Happy Africa Day! If we unite as one, we can instil a sense of African pride and make Africa better together.
