LEX Africa Chairperson appointed co-chair of IBA Antitrust Committee

Africa Update

LEX Africa would like to congratulate its Chairperson Pieter Steyn for his appointment as co-chair of the Antitrust committee of the International Bar Association (IBA).

Pieter became the first ever African co-chair of the Antitrust Committee from 1 January 2016.

As co-chair his responsibilities will include co-chairing the IBA competition/communications conference in Amsterdam in June 2016 and the IBA competition conference in Florence in October 2016.

The Antitrust Committee provides an international forum for the exchange of the most current thinking in the field of antitrust law. In addition, there is a strong commitment to bring together international practitioners to facilitate closer working relationships. The committee is increasingly valued by government officials and regulators for its expertise and practical input on antitrust developments.

The Antitrust Committee also forms working groups to study major international competition policy issues and to submit comments to regulators on proposed new and reformed legislation. Working Groups chaired by Pieter have previously made submissions to the South African and COMESA competition authorities. African competition law developments are of great interest to the Committee and will form a focus of Pieter’s term of office as co-chair.
