24th AGM of the LEX Africa Alliance

The 24th Annual General Meeting of the LEX Africa Alliance was held in Mauritius on 6 and 7 May 2016 and hosted by Mauritian member, Erriah Chambers.  The AGM was well attended by over 25 delegates from LEX Africa member firms in Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Reunion Islands, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.  Also attending were representatives of global and regional legal networks ADVOC, Asean Plus, Interlaw, Interlex and Multilaw, US law firm Covington and Burling and UK consultancy firm K2 Intelligence.

For the first time, the AGM included panel discussions on “The role of Mauritius in the economic and legal development of Africa”, “Challenges, opportunities and “hot topics” facing legal networks”, “Recent investment issues and developments in Africa” and “Dispute resolution developments in Africa”.  Speakers included Mr George Chung, the economic adviser in the Mauritian Prime Minister office, Ms Lilawtee Rajun from the Mauritian Export Association, Mr Parik Tulsidas from Africa Bank in Mauritius and Mr Mathieu Madeng who is the CEO of Standard Chartered Bank in Mauritius.  LEX Africa would like to thank these individuals for taking the time to attend the AGM and provide delegates with insight into the economic development of Mauritius.

A cocktail party on 6 May 2016 at the Westin Hotel was opened by the Mauritian Attorney General, Mr Ravi Yerrigadoo, and attended by members of the Mauritian business, legal and financial community.

Members held intensive and fruitful discussions on the strategy and business plan of the Alliance for the next year. The AGM was also a great opportunity for delegates to meet, network and build lasting relationships against the back drop of the beautiful Indian Ocean and a catamaran cruise.

LEX Africa would like to thank Erriah Chambers and particular, Dev Erriah for all his efforts in organising and arranging, what can only be described as an exceptionally successful event.

Dev Erriah said “Erriah Chambers was delighted to have hosted the AGM”. Pieter Steyn, the Chairperson of LEX Africa, added “The AGM is the highlight of the LEX Africa year and reminds us that we are a living Alliance of friends and colleagues going back over 20 years.  We look forward to next year’s AGM in Lagos”.
